Marbodal hosts young designer

A decorative detail becomes both a handle and a peephole in the mind of Marbodal's new protégé, Anna Irinarchos. Marbodal has given her the opportunity to realise the Gallery concept kitchen, her graduate project from Beckmans College of Design.

The secret behind Gallery is the cabinet doors -- they are both open and closed at the same time. The doors have lit openings that enable decorative items to be displayed, while concealing others. The Gallery doors are trendy with the absence of handles, using instead the peepholes for opening.

"I love china and ceramics, so I often go to flea markets to get a mixture of the old with the new. At home, all of my things compete with one another on open shelves so nothing really stands out," says Anna Irinarchos. This is how her idea was born to design kitchen cupboards with the ability to display certain things, while other objects are simultaneously hidden.

"With Gallery, you can easily change your kitchen to coordinate with daily living, special occasions or the seasons, depending on what you make visible. For example, you can decide to display only red objects for a while," she adds.

Discovered
Anna Irinarchos recently graduated from design school, where she chose to focus on kitchens for her final project. Her confident designs caught the eye of Marbodal's designer Gunilla Allard at Beckman's graduation exhibit in 2006. Around the same time, Anna had contacted Marbodal's product manager Bo Johansson.

"I immediately fell for Anna's philosophy behind all the fun details in her designs. Many young designers have fresh, exciting ideas, but Anna Irinarchos has thought one step further," explains Bo Johansson.

Gallery kitchen for singles
The young student's design concept has been adapted to Marbodal's assortment with a new colour and surfaces of walnut melamine. It has been constructed as a kitchen for single households and can also function as an office kitchen.

"I enjoy discussions with the knowledgable people at Marbodal in order to translate the concept into an actual kitchen. There is a lot to think about, such as how built-in appliances are to be integrated with the concept's solutions. And certain aspects of the design have to be adapted to harmonise with market prices," says Anna.

Make way for the new
The cooperation between Marbodal and Anna Irinarchos is a win-win situation. Marbodal strives to inspire by showcasing kitchen innovations that are not yet in production. How the future will unfold for Anna is as of yet a story untold.

"We wanted to give Anna Irinarchos and the Gallery concept kitchen space at the Stockholm Furniture Fair," says Bo Johansson. "This is only the beginning, to be able to offer visitors to our stand a preview of what may be yet to come."
